Chapter 01
Flatwork around the house
Driveways, walkways, sidewalks and patios are the concrete most homeowners actually live on every day, and they're also the pieces that take the most direct weather, root pressure and freeze-thaw of anything on the property. Foundations and stairs
Foundation work on a house is smaller in scale than a commercial pour but no less exacting. It has to sit level, hold its line under the framing above it, and go in clean the first time, because a foundation is the one piece of a house nobody gets a second look at once the walls go up.
Stairs get poured to the same standard: a rise and run that is even from the first step to the last, because an uneven stair is the kind of small defect a homeowner feels with their feet every single day, long after the crew is gone.
Chapter 03
Colored concrete and exposed aggregate
Not every residential pour has to look like a job site. Colored concrete brings a tint into the mix itself rather than a coating on top, and exposed aggregate finishes a slab by washing back the surface paste so the stone underneath shows through, giving a driveway or patio texture and depth that plain gray concrete doesn't have.
Both are offered as an upgrade on any of the flatwork above, not as a separate product line, so a driveway or patio can be ordered exactly as plain or as finished as the homeowner wants.
Broken concrete is a trip hazard
Carl Johanson & Son puts it plainly on their own site: don't let broken concrete become a safety hazard at your home. A heaved slab, a cracked step, a walkway that's lifted at one joint, these aren't cosmetic problems. They're the kind of thing a guest catches a toe on in the dark, or a kid trips over running to the car.
Replacing a bad section of driveway, sidewalk or stairs is the same job as pouring new, just against an existing edge instead of a bare lot, and it's one of the more common calls the company gets from homeowners who've been putting it off.
